However, latex has one major drawback: it causes an allergic reaction in some people, although today this is less common than 30 years ago because many of the allergy-causing proteins have been extracted from commercial products. Vinyl disposable gloves are made from (polyvinylchloride) granules, one of the most widely used types of plastic, and also from plasticisers (mostly phthalates), which make them more flexible and mouldable.
For this reason, vinyl gloves refer to the regulations on plastic materials, unlike latex and nitrile gloves which comply with the regulations on rubber materials.
They are a cost-effective alternative to latex and nitrile gloves and are mainly used in the healthcare sector (nursing homes) for personal care and hygiene.
If you are not familiar with polyethylene, you should know that it is one of the most widely used and least expensive plastics. It is usually identified by the letters PE. Very stable chemically, it is an excellent insulator for films and bags that come into contact with food.
There are two types of polyethylene disposable gloves, depending on the type of polyethylene used in their production: high-density PE (HDPE) and low-density PE (LDPE).
The first is stiffer and harder and is chosen above all due to its low cost. It is used, for example, in petrol stations and grocery stores. Whereas the second is more pliable, less rigid and therefore used in situations requiring greater hand sensitivity, such as in the medical field.
But it doesn’t end there…are you familiar with CPE or Cast PE? We’re talking about a polyurethane formulation that is made with a calendering process. This gives the disposable gloves a special knurled surface for superior sensitivity and grip.
Finally, let’s not forget tpe gloves (thermoplastic elastomer gloves), which are perfect for handling fatty and oily foodstuffs, very sensitive and with an effective grip, also characterised by an increased thickness that offers considerable resistance.
