My Facebook page keeps showing me ads for "Aluminum Barrel End Thread Protector", for .22 Ruger and other caliber rifles.

The rules say not to post links to products for sale, so I won't post the link that I get when I click on the ad in FB, but I hope you know what I'm talking about. The brand name seems to be "yibato".

I searched the sub for "Thread protector" and found over a dozen posts, but they all assumed everyone knows what a thread protector does, besides falling off and getting stuck.

What is a thread protector for? ELI5, please.

Edit:

I think I've been misled by a picture. The picture on the yibaoto web site shows two parts. One is a big cylinder with a slot in the side that has a threaded end coming out of it, the other is smaller and looks like a nut (the kind that goes on a bolt), except it is circular, not square. I suspect the big piece is the "Barrel adapter" and the small one is the thread protector. The title is "Thread Protector", though.
