W300 ISODISC - BÖHLER US

BÖHLER W300 ISODISC is a 5% chromium steel and corresponds to material number 1. (X37CrMoV5-1). This common tool steel has good hot toughness as well as a high hot hardness and a high resistance against heat-checkings. The combination of these properties makes it a standard choice in extrusion, forging and low-pressure die casting. This material is also available as W300 ISOBLOC which is a remelted grade with improved cleanliness, homogeneity and toughness.

Comparison of DIN 1. and 1. Steels - LinkedIn

Both 1. and 1. steels are hot work tool steels. This article aims to compare these two types of steel in terms of their chemical composition, properties, and applications.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of a steel grade is crucial as it determines the steel’s properties and performance. Here are the chemical compositions of 1. and 1. steels:

Properties and Applications

  • Toughness: Both steels are known for their toughness, but 1. is noted for its exceptional toughness and its ability to maintain its properties even at elevated temperatures. This suggests that 1. might be tougher, especially at high temperatures. Overall the difference in toughness is not significant and in literature, the amount of toughness of both grades mostly has been reported as equal.
  • Strength: 1. has slightly better strength than 1. specifically at elevated temperatures.

  • Thermal Properties: Thermal Expansion of 1. and 1. is almost similar but 1. thermal expansion is higher than 1.. On the other hand, the Thermal Conductivity of 1. is much lower than 1. and the reason for it could be finer grains

  • Heat Checking: Both 1. and 1. have heat-checking resistance determined by conducting impact bending tests. 1. better resistance against Heat Checking makes it ideal in situations in which Heat Checking is the main failure cause.

Please note that the “better” steel depends on the specific application and working conditions. Both steels have their advantages, and the choice between them should be based on the requirements of the specific application.
