Shanxi province has released a new set of technical standards for the environmentally safe backfilling of coal gangue, a byproduct of coal mining. Issued by the Shanxi Provincial Market Supervision Administration, the Technical Specifications for Environmental Protection in Eco-Friendly Backfilling of Coal Gangue will take effect on April 22. The new regulations mark a major effort to tackle coal gangue pollution and promote sustainable land use.

The standards provide clear guidelines for key aspects of backfilling operations. They outline fundamental principles and objectives, ensuring that backfilling practices align with environmental protection goals. Before backfilling begins, thorough site assessments must be conducted, using detailed investigation methods to confirm environmental suitability.

For backfilling itself, the regulations set strict requirements for selecting, transporting, and placing coal gangue to ensure long-term stability and safety. The standards also emphasize ecological restoration, specifying best practices for vegetation recovery and soil improvement to support sustainable land rehabilitation. Additionally, an environmental oversight system will be implemented to track changes in backfilled areas and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

By establishing clear protocols, the new standards provide a structured and practical approach to coal gangue disposal. They are expected to facilitate large-scale reuse, reduce the environmental impact of coal gangue accumulation, and contribute to land restoration efforts across Shanxi.
