As of March 23, Inner Mongolia has transmitted a total of 605.27 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity through its ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) grid, according to State Grid Mengdong Power Company. This milestone was reached after the Ximeng-Taizhou ±800kV UHVDC transmission line delivered over 11 billion kWh so far this year. Of the total power exports, 78.75 billion kWh came from renewable sources.

As one of China’s key energy and resource hubs, Inner Mongolia has been expanding its power exports through the UHVDC grid for the past seven years, with steady annual growth. In 2024 alone, the region transmitted 170.6 billion kWh. “UHVDC technology is designed for long-distance, high-capacity power transmission, enabling more efficient energy distribution across the country,” said Chao Daifeng, Party Secretary and Deputy General Manager of State Grid Inner Mongolia Extra-High Voltage Company.

Since 2017, Inner Mongolia has been using three major UHVDC transmission corridors—Ximeng to Taizhou, Zalute to Qingzhou, and Shanghaimiao to Shandong—to deliver surplus wind and solar power to provinces like Shandong and Jiangsu, supporting China’s transition to cleaner energy.

Looking ahead, Inner Mongolia plans to further optimize its renewable energy layout and accelerate the development of large-scale wind and solar projects in its desert and arid regions. By 2025, the region aims to launch several new UHVDC transmission lines, including those linking Western Inner Mongolia to Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Kubiqi to Shanghai, Tengger to Jiangxi, and Ulan Buh to Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei-Shandong. These initiatives will enhance cross-regional power distribution and strengthen national energy security.
